Holland became the first openly gay K-pop idol in South Korea after making his debut in January 2018 with the single “Neverland.” The music video received a 19+ rating in the country for featuring a rare, same-sex kiss scene — the first in K-pop’s history — as NextShark previously reported.
Holland previously revealed that he came out in middle school and decided to become a singer so he could become the voice for LGBTQ plus youth. In fact, his stage name was inspired by the Netherlands, which was the first to legalize same-sex marriage.
“There are not many celebrities in Korea who speak up for human rights. I thought there’s got to be someone like me who discloses their sexual identity,” he said.
Holland released another music video featuring a same-sex romance in 2019 for “Nar_C,” the lead track of his self-titled EP.
The K-pop singer is set to make his acting debut in the BL (Boy’s Love) drama “Ocean Likes Me,” which stars Holland as the main lead alongside Han Gi-chan and Song Tae-yoon. The eight-episode series premieres in April.
