A GoFundMe and trust fund created for the loved ones of a security guard who died on Saturday after he was shot by armed robbers while working with a California news station has nearly reached its $25,000 goal.
What happened: Former police officer Kevin Nishita, who worked for Star Protection Agency, was protecting the KRON4 crew last Wednesday while covering a recent armed robbery at a clothing store in Oakland.
- He was shot in the lower abdomen at the 300 block of 14th Street as attackers attempted to nab the station’s camera gear.
- Nishita was taken to Highland Hospital where he died from his injuries three days later.
- He had previously worked as a police officer with Hayward Police, San Jose Police and the Colma Police departments, as well as the Oakland Housing Authority.
- The Oakland Police Department has launched an investigation and is offering up to $32,500 for more information that leads to the arrest of a suspect.
Donations: The GoFundMe, created by close friend Scott Lawrie, has raised more than $19,000 as of Monday for Nishita, noting that “donations for medical expenses, food, transportation for Nishita family and memorial expenses,” are appreciated.

- “Kevin always brought joy and would instantly light up the room with his smile!” Beth Minor, a friend from Nishita’s college, wrote. “My deepest condolences to his family.”
- “My heart breaks for the family and friends of KRON security guard Kevin Nishita,” Oakland Councilmember Sheng Thao tweeted.
- Thao added that a special city council meeting will also be held on Dec. 7 to tackle gun violence.
