Los Angeles authorities are investigating a “hate incident” involving a man who drove through a rally against anti-Asian violence and yelled “F*ck China!” while fleeing the scene.
The incident, which was caught on video by several attendees, occurred at the intersection of South Diamond Bar Boulevard and Grand Avenue just around noon on Sunday.
In one video, the man’s black Honda Civic can be seen driving through about a dozen protesters, who carried signs such as “Stop Asian Hate” and “End the Violence Against Asians.”
After making a U-turn, the driver yells “F*ck China!” and takes off.

A second video shows the driver pulling over after being followed by at least one protester, who managed to capture his license plate.
“Bye! F*ck China,” the driver says for the second time. “F*ck you!”
The LA County Sheriff’s Walnut/Diamond Bar Station released a report on Monday that describes the driver as a white male in his 50s. The case was listed as a hate “incident” rather than a hate “crime” because there was no injury or property damage.
“This incident happened just a few minutes after I left the rally,” Los Angeles County Supervisor Janice Hahn said in a statement. “This kind of vitriol is appalling and is the reason so many AAPI residents feel unsafe in their own neighborhoods.”
Hahn’s district includes Diamond Bar, which is located some 25 miles east of downtown Los Angeles. Census data shows Asian Americans make up more than 58% of the city’s population.
“The brazenness of doing this at an anti-hate rally speaks to the level that people will go to to harass and bully communities of color. I continue to stand with my constituents who were peacefully demonstrating against hate and I condemn this man’s actions,” Hahn added.
Anyone with information about the driver or the incident is asked to contact the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department at 626-913-1715. Those who wish to remain anonymous may call Crime Stoppers at 800-222-TIPS (8477).
